Practicing Independently as a Nurse Practitioner

There are a tremendous amount of determining factors involved when choosing a career path as a Nurse Practitioner. One key factor is state legislature and the effect that it has on restrictions and limitations on practice. It differs from state to state, at times, quite drastically.

While there are some states in the United States where a Nurse Practitioner is able to practice independently, there are many where they are unable to. Knowing the Nurse Practitioner friendly states is an important tool that assists both new and experienced clinicians to determine and refocus their career paths.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners came out with a map that serves as a guide for state practice environment. It is a great place to start when deciding what states are less restrictive than others. There are also Nurse Practice Acts for each state that provide additional information and usually direct you to that state specific Board of Nursing Here is an example for Delaware.

Another factor to keep in mind is the area of medicine being considered. Primary care is the most common area of medicine where Nurse Practitioners are able to practice independently. It is also the most common specialty that allows NPs to own their own. Right now there are even discussions about allowing NPs to practice independently in Primary Care in states with more restricting laws. State legislation will always be the dominant factor, but this is also of great importance.  Outpatient Primary Care clinics are the most common facility types for independently practicing Nurse Practitioners.

While state legislature is constantly changing, this is a great starting point for determining what states allow the most freedom within a Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice and their ability to practice independently. Learn the state laws and keep up with changes in legislation. It will ultimately assist in determining a career path or making adjustments in evolving careers. For more information please visit the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or a specific state Board of Nursing.
