Save Your Vision Month: 5 Natural Eye Care Tips from Nurses

This March, American Optometric Association is observing Save Your Vision Month. Eye care is one of the most important segments of healthcare. While our eyesight is affected by a wide array of factors, the two most common factors causing vision problems are fatigue and strain of the eyes.

Allow your eyes to recover and prevent them from getting damaged. Here are some effective eye care tips recommended by nurses:

  1. Stimulate Eye Muscles
After waking up, the first thing you have to do is wash your face with plenty of slightly cold water. Next, fill your oral cavity with water. Without emptying your mouth, close both your eyes and again splash some cold water onto them. This action will effectively stimulate your eye muscles. The water in your mouth will exert pressure on the muscles in and around your eyes and stimulate them. The splash of water, on the other hand, will work by enlivening your nerve endings and rejuvenating your skin.
  2. Sleep Well
When you sleep, your eyes get a lot of time off from bright lights and the strain they go through during the day. At least seven to eight hours will be blissful. According to experts, meditating for five to 10 minutes before going to bed is the most effective way of ensuring sound sleep.
  3. Massage Overworked Eyes
If you’re in front of the computer for long hours, this piece of advice is important. To massage your eyes, you will actually need to perform an exercise.Hold the eyebrows in between your index finger and thumb. This should be done in a way so that the index finger remains below the eyebrow and the thumb is placed above it. Now, press the eyebrows gently to straighten them; this action should exert pressure on every single point of the eyebrows. Next, roll your thumb gently around the eye ball.

This exercise should be performed once in every 3 to 4 hours. It will help improve blood circulation in your eyes and ensure that they are free from fatigue.

  4. Perform Exercises to Improve Your Eyesight
This exercise will work by stimulating the muscles around the eyeballs. You will need to begin by rotating the eyeballs. First rotate left and right, and then downwards and upwards. Do this first in anti-clockwise and then in the clockwise direction. Three repetitions of this exercise twice every day will surely enhance your vision significantly within four to six months.

Your eye specialist can teach you more of these exercises.

  5. Take Care of Your Diet
For having stress-free, healthy eyes, you must ensure that you are consuming nutrient-rich meals. Your meal should contain figs, raisins, almonds, carrots, oranges, green and leafy vegetables like coriander, fish, etc. Stay away from food items that contain preservatives. For good eye health, you must also avoid consuming foods that are too oily and spicy.
